How to keep your voice when using AI to write messages
The risk of sounding generic when you rely on AI for replies — and the specific habits that keep your personality in the conversation.
By Sebastian Kluger · Founder of KOPY · 8 min read

The most common complaint about AI-assisted messaging is that it makes everyone sound the same. This page is user habits that keep your personality in the thread. It is not how we fence the model (KOPY generation) and not the catalog of linguistic tics (robotic replies). If you skip habits, a perfect prompt stack still ships beige.
Key takeaways
- Always read before sending. Add one detail only you could add. Use AI for structure, you for voice.
- Pick tone first so you are not fighting the model's default middle.
- The goal is not hiding AI. The goal is a reply you would stand behind.
The problem with unedited AI output
Verbatim sends lack your quirks, references, sentence shape. Models produce the median plausible response. You are not the median. Dry people will think AI made them dry when they refused to add a hook: dry texting.
Habit 1: Always read before sending
Read it in your head. If it sounds like PR, change it. If the joke is not yours, rewrite the punchline. Drafts, not finals. Grammarly 2024's "52% don't know how to use AI" includes people who skip this step and then blame the category.
Habit 2: Make one thing specific
Add a detail only you could add. Last weekend. An opinion you hold. A callback from your shared history. One detail transforms a generic draft. I do this on every KOPY generate I send as myself. If I cannot add a detail, I probably should not send yet.
Habit 3: Use AI for structure, not voice
The useful part is angle, opening, the question to ask. The words, energy, humor can be yours. Figure out what to say, then say it your way. If you outsource voice, you will meet them and they will meet a stranger.
Habit 4: Pick the right tone first
Funny, Agree, Rizz, Question. Starting from intent beats starting from the model's beige prior. Then you only tweak words. Dating vs work: pick the mode or you will send a wink to your VP. Email vs LinkedIn vs WhatsApp are different rooms. LinkedIn: recruiter post. WhatsApp: WhatsApp post. Email: email post.
KPI table
| Habit | Skip | Keep |
|---|---|---|
| Read | Raw send | One pass |
| Specificity | Vibe praise | Private detail |
| Structure vs voice | Keep their diction | Keep their outline |
| Tone picker | Generate twice hoping | Choose once |
| Shame about AI | Over-edit to mush | Stand behind the send |
The goal is not to hide that you used AI
The goal is replies you are proud of, efficiently. Whether you wrote every word or got to 80% and polished 20% does not matter if the conversation is genuine. If you cannot say the sentence out loud, delete it.
Field notes
Testers who treated KOPY like a vending machine sounded like vending machines. Testers who treated it like a noisy intern sounded like themselves. I cannot prompt-engineer care.
WTI 2025 split: 52% see AI as a command tool, 46% as a thought partner. Habit 3 is the thought-partner path. Command-and-send is how robotic happens even with our banlist.
Apple will not save your voice. The extension inserts strings. You are the last filter. That is not a cop-out. That is the honest product boundary.
Worked edits
Draft: "That's so interesting, tell me more about your job." You: "wait you left consulting for a bakery. is the 4am part real or lore?"
Draft: "I'd love to find a time to connect." You: "coffee Thursday 8 near the park?"
Draft: "Haha that's hilarious." You: keep one laugh, add the callback, add a question. Three beats. Dry otherwise.
Frequently asked questions
Should I disclose AI? If they ask, don't lie. Unsolicited disclosure in a first Tinder line is its own performance.
What if I like the raw draft? Still add one tell. Cheap insurance.
Does voice clone replace this? No. Clone is the fence. Habits are the person. Robotic post is the failure taxonomy. Three layers.
Habit drills after the model speaks
Add a private noun
Every draft gets one. A street name, a leftover, a nickname. If you cannot add one, you are sending the median person. The median person is who they already ignore.
Read it out loud on the train, silently
If you would be embarrassed to have it overheard as your voice, edit. Embarrassment is data.
Cut the first sentence if it is a bow
Habits include the robotic deletes. You do not need to wait for the tic article. Bow, cut, send.
Keep one fragment
Models like complete clauses. Humans drop words. Leave a fragment on purpose so the rhythm is yours.
Do not add slang you do not use
Forced 'bestie' is a costume. Specificity is not slang. If you do not say bruv, do not paste bruv.
Tone picker before generate
If you generate then shop tones, you are rummaging. Pick Funny first or pick Professional first. The habit is intention.
Two generates max
A third is rumination. Anxiety post if you cannot stop. Habit is the cap.
Meet them in person test
Would this sentence survive coffee? If no, you used the model as a mask. Masks fall.
Work vs dating rooms
Habit: glance at the app icon before send. I have almost sent a Hinge cadence to a VP. The picker does not know the icon. You do.
When the draft is better than you
Sometimes the structure is better. Keep the structure, swap the voice. That is habit 3. Do not throw away a good question because the diction was off.
When the draft is worse than you
Throw it away. Type. The tool is optional. Habits include not using it. That is not failure. That is taste.
Shame
If you spend the edit pass trying to hide AI instead of trying to be true, you will over-smooth into mush. Stand behind the send. If you cannot, do not send.
A month of habits without touching the prompt stack
Week 1: only habit 1. Read every draft. Send none unread. You will hate the slowness and then notice the tics.
Week 2: add one private noun every time. Track whether people ask follow-ups. That is a continuation KPI you can feel.
Week 3: pick tone first for seven days. No default generate. If you refuse to pick, you are asking for beige.
Week 4: two generates max. If you hit three, type. The cap is the habit that saves anxiety from wearing a product mask.
If your problem is our banlist missing a word, file it as a clone bug, not a habit failure. If your problem is you will not add a noun, that is you. Keep the layers clean so SEO and your brain can both navigate.
More questions people ask after reading this
Should I disclose AI on a first date chat?
If asked, do not lie. Unsolicited disclosure in bubble one is often a performance. Habits are about the sentence you will stand behind, not a confession ritual.
What if my friends say I sound different?
Ask which sentence. If it is a noun you would not use, habits failed. If it is that you reply faster, that might be fine.
Can I save snippets of my voice?
Notes app, sure. That is a you-side clone. Our generator is still a fence. Do not confuse a snippet library with our prompt stack.
Is editing to mush also a habit failure?
Yes. Over-smoothing to hide AI is how you become beige. Cut tics, keep heat.
How do habits relate to dryness?
Dryness is missing hook and specificity. Habits put the noun back. Same thumb, different diagnosis if you never had a hook even before AI.
What if I like the raw draft more than my typing?
Keep the structure, add one tell. If you have no tell, you may be outsourcing the relationship. Coffee will reveal that.
Habit card that does not re-explain the prompt stack
Read. Add a noun. Pick tone first. Two generates max. Cut the bow. Keep a fragment. Do not wear slang you do not speak. Glance at the app icon so Hinge cadence does not hit Slack. Meet-them-at-coffee test. If you cannot add a noun, maybe do not send. If you over-smooth to hide AI, you will become beige, which is dryness plus shame. Dryness and tics and clone live on other URLs. This URL is the human loop after the string appears.
Grammarly's 52% do-not-know-how number is this loop skipped. WTI's command-versus-thought-partner split is habit 3. If you command-and-send, you skipped voice. If you iterate like a partner, you kept it. Apple will not save you. The extension inserts. You are the last filter. That is not a cop-out. That is the product boundary I will not blur to rank for 'how KOPY generates' or 'why AI sounds fake.' Those queries have homes. Let them stay there.
A month of habits is enough to know if the tool is making you more yourself or more median. If median, type more. If yourself-plus-speed, keep the loop. I use it that way. I still type when the sentence has to be mine in a way a fence cannot guess, like a joke from a decade of friendship. The model does not have the decade. You do. That is the whole point of a habit instead of a clone.
