Why AI replies sound robotic — and what actually fixes it
The specific patterns that make AI-generated text sound fake, and the prompt engineering techniques that eliminate them.

You can spot AI-written text from a mile away. Even if you can't articulate exactly why, something feels off. The rhythm is wrong. The word choices are too neat. The enthusiasm is misplaced.
This isn't inevitable. AI models are capable of producing natural-sounding text — they just have bad defaults. Here's what goes wrong and how to fix it.
The vocabulary problem
AI models are trained on text from the internet, which includes a lot of professional, formal writing. When asked to generate casual replies, they often produce vocabulary that's technically correct but nobody actually uses in conversation.
Common offenders: "utilize," "leverage," "delve," "foster," "nuanced," "tapestry," "embark," "facilitate." These words appear constantly in AI output because they appear constantly in the training data.
The fix is explicit vocabulary blocking. When you tell an AI model "do not use these words," it avoids them. KOPY maintains a banned vocabulary list that grows over time as new AI-isms emerge.
The structure problem
AI text tends to follow the same structural patterns: a direct answer, then elaboration, then a summary. It often starts with an affirmation ("Great question!") and ends with an offer to help ("Let me know if you need anything else!").
Real conversations don't follow these patterns. Real messages start mid-thought, end abruptly, and use implied context. The structural expectations of a text message and the structural instincts of a language model are completely different.
The specificity problem
AI tends toward generalizations. "That sounds great!" is a reply that could go to almost any message. Real people respond specifically: "That hiking trail sounds brutal, how long did it take you?"
Forcing AI to reference something specific from the incoming message is one of the most effective ways to make replies sound human. It signals that you actually read what was sent.
The energy problem
Humans naturally calibrate their reply energy to match incoming energy. A brief, casual message gets a brief, casual reply. A message full of exclamation points and emojis gets a more expressive reply.
AI models default to a medium-level, even tone regardless of the input. Fixing this requires explicit instructions about energy matching — or a system like KOPY's mode/tone framework that sets energy level as part of the configuration.
The result
Fix all four of these problems — vocabulary, structure, specificity, energy — and the output starts to sound like someone actually wrote it. Not perfect, not always indistinguishable from human writing, but good enough that the person reading it doesn't stop and think "did a robot write this?"
